I’ve long grown up and out of Record Store Day and ’FREE’ Comic Book Day - I’ve never liked queues, and there are very few things that make long-term queueing anyway worthwhile. When I used to indulge in Free Comic Book Day the whole thing was fraught with disappointments - you queue for an hour or more selecting 5 preferred free comic books from the longlist - but unless you were out queuing the night before - most or even all your first picks are gone by the time you ...
I normally use Free Comic Book Day to highlight some of the best titles currently available or focus on a particular imprint. I am well beyond the age when I can tolerate standing in queues for long periods, so I don’t indulge in Record Store Day or Free Comic Book Day Promos any more. I’m really not a fan of single flimsy issues, my preferences is for ’Trade Paperbacks’ with a litle more story arc, and usually includes special issues, cover art variations etc. Both ...
Much like with Record Store Day, I consider myself a little too old to be queueing with the masses - for the chance of 5 flimsy collectibles - which will most likely end up being compiled into a compendium volume at a later date anyhow. I am almost entirely TP-based (Trade Paperback) these days - preferring a more solid volume with a full narrative arc, versus collecting episodically. I also tend to find those collected volumes keep better than the paper covered slivers.
I would say I ...
A long lapsed hobby of mine properly kicked back in around 3 years ago. In the past, and mostly in my youth, I collected an enormous variety of comic books. Being half-English I benefitted from all those English childhood influences - Beano, Dandy, Whizzer, Commando and Starblazer and latterly 2000 AD and Viz even. Iceland being the confluence of Europe and the Americas - we got all the Marvel and DC comics, mixed in with all the Belgian and French stuff too - Asterix, Alix, Lucky Luke, Spirou ...
You may recall my delight at visiting this year’s Super London Comic Convention, and my declaring this the year of the comic! Every year something different takes my focus of attention. Two years ago it was blu-rays, last year it was grownup Lego, and this year I have become obsessed again with comics - strictly speaking Graphic Novels or Serialised Art. I have found a new level of admiration for the level of detail and process that goes into creating a typical comic book. In particular ...
Following on swiftly form Record Store Day - that is to say the 1st Saturday in May, we have Free Comic Book Day - where you can pick up a bag of free swag at your local comics emporium. I will be making the usual trip to one of my favourite London stores - Forbidden Planet on Shaftersbury Avenue.
My two current favourite comics / graphic novel series are both from Image Comics, which has kind of overtaken Vertigo as my current favourite Imprint. The latest collected volumes for each ...
Just a fortnight after Record Store Day - we have Free Comic Book Day to cheer us up - it takes place on the first Saturday in May (today!).
Comic Book Stores mean much more than just cartoon strips; my favourite - ’Forbidden Planet’ on Saftesbury Avenue stocks an enormous collection of Comics and Graphic Novels, Books, DVDs, Figurines, Art, Toys, and Collectables. I’ve been a long-term fan of comics, from an early obsession with Commando and Starblazer, DC and Marvel...
