LinkedIn 2017Discover 2026’s most anticipated film releases!

LinkedIn 2017Which movies will define 2026? Find out in our highlights!

LinkedIn 20172026 film trends revealed: Horror and sci-fi take center stage!

You never know what kind of cinema year you’re going to get - you’re always hopeful for a slew of well-crafted movies, but as the year rolls on - several of those likely candidates fail to stick the landing!

The worst film of last year was the incredibly weird and disjointed Disney Snow White affair - with the really weird, unsettling and out of place dwarves (totally different style of animation to the rest of the film!). I found it entirely unwatchable and gave up after 10 minutes! It’s the only film last year that I just could not endure to complete!

And several other films failed to make the grade - including Captain America Brave New World, The Electric State, Ballerina, and Tron : Ares - all of those were major disappointments - with other less obvious films rising up through the ranks - and some of the more idiosyncratic ones incredibly satisfactory - like Predator : Badlands and Nobody 2. I also found ’Companion’ highly entertaining - which came across a little like a combination of M3GAN and a Terminator T-1000!

Horror played a huge part last year - where I did a separate selection of that genre, while I combined the rankings for this article.

In terms of overarching trends - there’s a lot of Horror films coming out this year from the big studios, as well as smattering of sci-fi - which I’m looking forward to immensely.

In someway shows like Alien Earth and Murderbot - surpassed a lot of movie content - last year was great for Sci-Fi and Horror - and it looks like it’s more of the same for this year!

Top 20-odd Leading Oscar Best Picture Contenders in approximate order of likeliness

close

If we keep one eye on the Golden Globes, One Battle After Another, Sinners, Hamnet, Secret Agent and Kpop Demon Hunters all did very well.

Most of the critics have One Battle After Another coming top ahead of Sinners. Where the best Actor Oscar seems to be between Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio. While Paul Thomas Anderson seems to be a shoe-in for the Director Oscar - and usually Best Picture and Director go hand-in-hand.

There will still be several surprises - while I feel that this year will mostly go with the form book - where Hamnet is something of a dark stalker horse here - and could pull a few surprises - like at the Golden Globes.

Generally though - I feel the order of success will be mostly in line with the following list :

  • One Battle After Another, 18, Warner Bros : Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson
  • Sinners, 18, Warner Bros : Dir. Ryan Coogler
  • Marty Supreme, 18, A24 : Josh Safdie

Films I'm most looking forward to this year

As mentioned in the intro - there's a lot of Sci-Fi this year - including an entirely new The Dog Stars property from Ridley Scott, the sort of Minority Report-like Mercy, quirky Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die, Project Hail Mary, and of course Mandalorian and Grogu!

These following ones are the ones that stood out most for me this year - and I had to do several iterations of the above 4 by 4 grid to get the right representative balance - and to include most of the heavy hitters - where the only likely big box office property that I had to cut from the visual was the new Spider-Man one - which usually does pretty well.

Last year's most watched Movie was The Minecraft Movie (still not seen it!) - while this year I feel it might be The Mandalorian and Grogu - of course we will need to wait and see!

I'm so busy at the start of January - that I probably won't make it to the cinema until quite late this month.

I still have a fair few Oscar Contenders to watch - so I will focus on those mostly for the next couple of months.

My likely first Cinema visit this year will be to see 'Mercy'!
