Television is now a completely different beast to what it was when I grew up. Only my parents still watch regularly scheduled TV at the appointed hour. Everyone else watches what they want to when they want. It’s now the case that you have thousands of channels sometimes with nothing to see! Only there is everything to see - as there are a myriad of both free and paid-for services providing programming on practically any and every subject you care to mention.

Now TV User Interface goes from Bad to Worse

I really don’t know what the developers for the NowTV.com interface are doing these days or who is instructing them. The whole experience was not a particularly pleasant one before - with a still separate pop-up window player which has very poor connectivity and continuity with the main video library. You are kind of OK if you just want to watch the next episode in the series, but totally stranded if you wan’t to switch to something else.

The arbitrary problem with video ...

Netflix hits a rich vein of form with Youth Mystery Dramas

Netflix continues to grow from strength to strength, and what was once a Blockbuster-alike video rental is now one of the world’s leading producers of high quality original ’TV’ programming. It is easily my preferred version of ’Television’ (99% of my viewing is on-demand) and its eclectic mix of quality content and superior user experience sees it outpace the likes of Amazon Video and NowTV / Sky - to which I also subscribe.

I use 8 different streaming services fairly regularly - Amazon Prime Video / Fire TV, Apple TV, BBC iPlayer, Channel 4 All 4, ITV Hub, Netflix, Now TV, and YouTube of course!

I use the various mobile and TV apps, widgets and boxes, but since I spend most of the time working or organising on my Desktop, this is the primary access point / device for most of those services.

My browser of choice is Chrome, followed by Firefox; I will then use Safari at a push, but am loathe to go ...

Staggered releasing is back in the news again following Taylor Swift’s decision to withhold the second promo track from her new ’1989’ album from UK fans only. The single ’Out of the Woods’ was made available for individual download on iTunes, unless of course you happened to live in the UK. As a UK citizen, the only way to get hold of said track was then to pre-order the whole new album.

Taylor Swift then added insult to injury by claiming that this was ...

Movie studios are unwittingly encouraging piracy by delaying film rentals

Warner Bros started off this stupidity by increasing their initial 28 day retail to rental window to 56 days. Now Disney is considering a 28-day rental window of its own. On the same day that the Bridesmaids movie announces record online rentals / on-demand views - approaching 5 million views in four months.

Do these movie studios not realise that the majority of people now watch rentals, and ongoingly, fewer and fewer DVDs and even movie downloads will be sold - as for most people, seeing a ...

Netflix launched in UK with 30 day free trial

I’ve been waiting a while now for the arrival of Netflix on these shores, so was it worth the wait?

When I received the initial email invitation, it’s poor quality made me unsure as to whether this was some sort of phishing effort. This was not helped by the very basic Netflix holding page presented to UK users.

In any case, I had been waiting a while for this so I dipped my toes into the 30 day free trial. You have to enter you credit card details during registration, which will ...

In order to further safeguard its future, HMV has just recently launched HMV On-Demand - a video streaming / download service running on the FilmFlex Movies Platform. This service introduces further competition to iTunes and LoveFilm, and comes just ahead of the 2012 launch of American video behemoth Netflix. There are of course numerous other movie services through set-top boxes and consoles - such as Movies on the Play Station 3, but the big four are seen to be Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant ...

I was a little sad to see that Google TV failed to take off, as I really saw it as the perfect solution to my viewing requirements. I spend most days and several nights working on my 27" iMac, which has ended up as my proxy television set as well. I am so grateful to the various terrestrial TV on-demand services, best exemplified by the BBC’s iPlayer, but pretty much every major terrestrial Channel has one now:

BBC - iPlayer
ITV - ITV Player
Channel 4 - 4 on Demand (4oD)
Channel 5 - Demand 5
