Catalogue Items: Price Increase Guide

Overview

Control > Commerce > Catalogue Items

If you have active subscribers and you wish to increase the price of their subscription, then you will need to perform the needed changes to the original catalogue item and set up a renewal catalogue item.

In this guide, you will learn how the above can be accomplished.

Steps

To set up a price rise for subscriptions, you can follow these steps to ensure a smooth transition:

1.- Plan Ahead: Set the price rise more than 10 days in the future to avoid complications with existing orders. This allows you to manage renewals and communications effectively.

2.- Add the Renewal Catalogue Item: Add a renewal catalogue item 10 days before the price rise. For example, if the price rise is on 01 Jan 2025, add the renewal item on 21 Dec 2024.

3.- Send Notifications: Send an email notice to subscribers before the renewal catalogue item is added, ensuring they are informed of the upcoming price change.

4.- Update Prices: On the date of the price rise (e.g., 01 Jan 2025), update the catalogue item price or shift to the renewal catalogue item. If there is a promotions channel catalogue item, switch it accordingly.

5.- Deprecate Old Catalogue Items: Deprecate the old catalogue item on the date of the price rise to prevent new orders at the old price.

6.- Manage Existing Orders:

  • Orders generated before the renewal catalogue item is added will renew at the old price
  • Orders generated between the addition of the renewal item and the price rise will renew at the new price
  • Orders generated after the price rise will automatically be at the new price

By following these steps, you can manage a price rise effectively, ensuring that all orders and communications are handled smoothly.

Create the renewal catalogue item

Before amending the original catalogue item you will need to create the renewal catalogue item.

Note: You should not change the price on the original catalogue item because that can affect your eCommerce and accounting stats.

The correct procedure is to treat the price increase as a new product, similar to a “step up” product.

1.- Create the renewal Product Article by copying the original, then create the corresponding catalogue item via the eCommerce option on the article detail screen.

2.- Or create the renewal catalogue item using the Catalogue Items Import (Control > Commerce > Catalogue Items Import)

For more information on Catalogue Items, please read the Catalogue Items Guide.

Select or relate the subscription plan

You can select the Subscription Plan when editing the Catalogue Item. Alternatively you can add it as a Digital Good. It is associated with the Weekly Subscription plan

You will need to do the same for the renewal catalogue item, Weekly Subscription (Price 2023).

Go to the ‘Good’ panel and click on the Add button, then relate the new catalogue item to the existing subscription plan.

Set up the renewal catalogue item on the payment processing platform

You will need to set up the renewal catalogue item in the same way you created the original catalogue item on the payment processing platform of your choice.

Note: most payment providers will use the term ‘Product’ instead of Catalogue Item.

Affino supports Renewal Catalogue Items for Stripe and GoCardless payment gateways. Paypal is not supported.

Note: for Stripe, you will need to copy-paste the new price code (in Stripe this is the price_ id and not the prod_ id) to the external id field.

Amend the original catalogue item

You will need to amend the original catalogue item by adding the newly created one as a Renewal Catalogue Item.

Control > Commerce > Catalogue Items > (Edit) > Subscription > Renewal Catalogue Item

Edit the original catalogue item and then navigate to the Subscription panel.

Make sure to select the ‘Automatic Renewal’ option.

Click Select on the ‘Renewal Catalogue’ Item option and choose the newly created renewal catalogue item.

Once this is done, your active subscribers will continue with the same subscription plan, but when the time comes to renew the subscription, they will be automatically charged the new price due to the Renewal Catalogue Item being set in place.

Coupons

Control > Commerce > Coupons

You need to be aware that coupons do not carry over from the original to the renewal catalogue item.

The renewal catalogue item will not inherit the discount, even if the original had (i.e.) 20% deducted due to a coupon.

The previous coupon is not applied to the renewal.

As a workaround, you can price in the discount on the renewal catalogue item.

Enable Renewal Catalogue Items on Payment Gateway

The final step is to tell the Payment Gateway to pass through the new price. This is done by enabling the following setting:

Stripe:

GoCardless:
