This chapter starts with the appointment of Grace Lewis as the new Head of Events at The Bookseller. Grace came with a vision to give The Bookseller Events a starring role with a bigger impact - in particular their flagship British Book Awards Event. Grace initially had concerns about the styling of events on Affino, but these were quickly overcome when we showcased the myriad of styling options available.
So the key goal was to make Affino Advanced Events more Expansive and Impactful, with more granularity - while maintaining their manageability and ease of maintenance. This would mean that The Bookseller team could roll out full site experiences, with all the productivity benefits of Affino’s Advanced Events, whist those events appeared as completely independent micro-sites with their own dedicated navigation and pages.
There were various considerations for how to deliver the full impact that The Bookseller team was looking for - whilst also keeping the costs low, and empowering The Bookseller team with more productivity. It became evident early on that we would need to revamp and upgrade the Affino Advanced Events Module to give Grace the added impact she desired, and the greater flexibility in surfacing the fresh take on the content elements within the Awards.
Most of the considerations were in the area of customisation - so that Grace could shape the events to rollout in the desired look and feel. In particular The Bookseller team wanted to be able to quickly and easily set up high impact events pages, each with its own custom navigation. This involved adding new Affino event options for the various Navigation, Header and Content elements - in terms of how they were presented and what media elements were used.
A key ingredient in the dynamic rollout of event content has been the clever use of Article Steps so that they could be sequenced, with live elements appearing at preset intervals - combining the Step Publishing Time Elements and Security to great effect.
The Affino team rolled out the new Events features and trained The Bookseller team on how to best use them so The Bookseller event Sites could be built productively entirely in-house by their in-house Team. For most competing systems - the platform owners would need to do a certain amount of the setup work each time - while for Affino - all that would be able to be handled entirely in-house at The Bookseller.
There is no limit, nor incremental costs, on how many events and awards sites The Bookseller team can set up on their Affino service. The enhancements we rolled out in Affino mean that other brands in The Stage Media Group can now also benefit from the improved events and awards features, as can all other Affino users.
Productivity and Manageability are always key to Affino sites - and all client businesses can wholly manage their entire website experience - including the build of new Sites on the Affino Platform - entirely in-house.
For The Bookseller the principal personnel involved in the project roll-out were Head of Events Grace Lewis, and Online & Digital Specialist Mat Tor. For Affino the team was headed up by Susan Kerrigan - Head of Projects, and our development team led by Julius Metyko.
A huge part of the Collaboration was in the origin and handling of specifications - and making sure that everything stayed on task, and didn't overcomplicate the management of the solution.
Every decision needed to be impact-reviewed from every angle - both agency-side and client-side - to make sure everything matched up to expectations. There was also a specific need to ensure that the solution didn't get too complicated and land beyond the reach of the engaged project team.
These projects are always easier when you have great leadership at both ends - and Grace definitely came in with a very specific game plan which was crucial to how quickly we were able to roll out the enhanced solution.
Projects often break away into committees and subcommittees which can all too easily stifle progress - for this particular project - movement was swift and highly focused. Everyone knew very early on what we were working towards - and it made for a very swift and streamlined experience.
There's always some snagging to be done at the end - where elements don't end up exactly as they were conceived - and by and large all of those wrinkles got very elegantly resolved in the end.
It really helps when there is a solid and fully shared plan where everyone understands their role from the start.
I believe the development elements here were added in an entirely pain-free manner for both sides. It all made for very smooth running.
Much of the Affino functionality was already in place - and it was in part a case of applying those options somewhat differently. While as mentioned in the intro - we also of course needed to add a number of new settings to the Advanced Events Module - to yield further options on specific formatting and surfacing of content and media.
The hierarchy was broadened - such that you could feature different navigations, include or bypass header banners and media, and have a lot more flexibility in the various underlying pages.
Those extra settings were mostly about empowering the system and The Bookseller Staff - to achieve the preferred look and feel / house style that Grace Lewis had set out. It was critical that The Bookseller Staff would be able to roll out this site build on their own, and be able to tackle new and subsequent Event Site Builds with relative ease.
A big part of the Affino Platform is Empowerment and Productivity - enabling very small teams to achieve the nigh impossible with relative ease. After the original site setup and rollout - most Affino Clients are able to deploy new sites freely at will - with a very high degree of flexibility.
The smooth rollout of the new site was much to do with Grace Lewis's clear vision from the start, and how well the two teams worked together.
Obviously this project had much to do with esoterics, ergonomics and advanced formatting. Where the final proof was in how slick the new site experience was and the small deft touches for all the underlying content. Using Article Steps Publishing Times and Security to sequentially and dynamically introduce new content details.
There aren't really any empirical measurements here - beyond the general customer satisfaction from the improved user experience.
At project completion Mat Tor stated - "We’re very happy with the flexibility and user experience the new platform offers - and we're confident that the more granular control over all event content will reap substantial traffic benefits in the future”.
Mat further referred to how effortless he found the build and rollout - as he did much of that work himself - and how substantial the cost savings were that The Bookseller Team could carry out all the work themselves - while with a different platform there would almost inevitably be additional setup charges. With Affino they could roll out the new Nibbies Award Site themselves, and can henceforth build up additional full-featured Event Sites without encountering further costs.
With most Event Systems out there - you pay for every individual and additional event - and whenever that needs to be renewed - when the next one rolls along for instance. While for Affino - you can deploy new Events Sites yourself - all at will and with no costs moving forward!
Affino was already a powerful system at the start of the project - it is even more powerful now!
We at Affino are delighted with how well the new Nibbies Site turned out - and it's for sure a flagship ambassador for the Affino Advance Events Module!
"Setting up AI with Markus and Chris was simple and gave me a clear understanding of how the Affino system works. Within hours, it was giving good answers and even generating its own questions within articles. It’s a game-changer for site search, helping users find valuable content that might otherwise be missed. A big plus is that the AI only uses our own content, so we know exactly what it's working with."
"I really appreciated the care Affino gave throughout the rollout. Going live can feel intense with the pace and adjustments needed, but if you stay the course, it’s absolutely worth it."
"Having a virtual trainer on hand through Affino’s AI support has been invaluable. It’s helped me learn fast, with instant, clear answers to any question. And when the AI can’t assist, the Affino team is always quick to step in and guide me through."

"Whilst we have always been able to see which articles have been the most popular, the new Article Report functionality allows us to instantly see which types of audiences are reading a particular article without setting up conversion events. To retrospectively interrogate this data has been a godsend and has given us a more detailed view of audience engagement with absolute ease."
"Working with Affino has been instrumental in creating the very best environment for us to engage fully with our readership.”

"Icelandair Cargo has been with Affino since 2005. Our internal customer web based on the Affino platform is well received and widely used by our customers and interacts via webservices with our Cargo Systems. "We worked with Affino for almost two years on a major website build and platform migration. It was an extremely complex project involving many bespoke elements. Affino were thoroughly responsive and communicated well throughout and their team were friendly and willing to help us achieve our ambitious goals. We’re very pleased with the modern and professional look and feel of the new website and users have been similarly impressed. Several of the bespoke elements added to the database platform have enhanced our ability to analyse our data and the platform works smoothly and reliably. Affino’s work has helped us to scale up our operations as well as grow and strengthen our brand."
"A very easy to use and highly functional experience, the new site looks fantastic - we've ended up with a great final product after a really positive and smooth running operation.
