Film Release Highlights for 2021

2020 was obviously a highly disruptive year - both for the making of cinema, and showcasing the final product. Leading to Disney’s Mulan for instance being launched on the Disney+ platform versus an official cinema release.

It follows that a number of 2020 film premieres got delayed and postponed into 2021 - while I feel this year will largely be equally disruptive and more than a few productions will be needed to be saved by Netflix or Amazon - and will end up getting their premier online.

Four of the films I featured last year are carried over - and I fully expect there to be more delays until Coronavirus is fully under control and at a 70% level of heard immunity. A lot of films are still jostling around the release schedule - and I feel that if cinema’s aren’t fully open in April - which is highly likely, then James Bond / No Time To Die will be pushed back a few more months.

2021 will see a lot of intended 2020 movies released, while I feel that some of this year’s releases may well be pushed into 2022.

A number of these don’t have official release dates yet - while I’m assuming that Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch will feature at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in May.

There are some great releases happening this year, while the Disney/Marvel/Lucasfilm enterprise seems to be having a relatively quite year release-wise - obviously more focused on producing all those new TV Shows for the Disney+ channel.

These were my favourite films of 2020 and - where I viewed them :

  1. Parasite - Cinema (Korean)
  2. Jojo Rabbit - Cinema
  3. 1917 - Cinema
  4. The Lighthouse - Cinema
  5. Mank - Netflix
  6. Blood Machines - Shudder / Amazon
  7. Bacurau - MUBI / Amazon (Brazilian)
  8. Queen & Slim - Amazon Prime Free
  9. Hamilton - Disney+
  10. The Personal History of David Copperfield - Cinema

I’ve already reported that I used to attend the cinema on a weekly basis - most Saturdays really, while in 2020 I only turned up 7 times - obviously because of the pandemic.
